What if more of your students came to school ready to learn math? The Count from Sesame Street will soon have help developing number sense. And Dora the Explorer and Diego will soon have company in the land of educational television. The new show “Team Umizoomi” is Nickelodeon’s new venture aimed at teaching math to preschool students. According to an article published in the New York Times, characters convince their tiny viewers that they are already great in math through songs similar to the School House Rock methodology some of us grew up listening to as children. Episodes begin in late January. Concepts to be covered include counting, measurement and patterns accompanied by math vocabulary development. A sister and brother team of “mini and mighty superheroes” Milli and Geo teach math in real life situations accompanied by their robot buddy. Visiting Nickelodeon’s website offers more details and links to math games. Decide you are a fan? Visit the Nickelodeon website and you too can make a t-shirt or whatever you dream using a Team Umizoomi iron on. Hope this is news you can use.
