  Background:
  • What makes you personally curious about this question?
  • What is known so far about this question?
  • What methods, if any, have been used to study this question in the past?
  • Why is this question relevant to human, animal, natural life on Earth?
  • If your experiment cost a lot of money, would you still do it?  Why?
Hypothesis:
  • What fact are you trying to prove?  and/or
  • What principle or concept are you trying to demonstrate?
Methods:
  • What will you do?
  • What materials will you use?
  • What will you record your data with?
  • How will you measure your results?
  • What controls are you using?
Every experimental method requires certain controls.  You need to use controls in your experiment to disprove the alternative hypothesis.  Results/data:
  • Present your data in an easily understandable way.
  • Present your data in a way that will make your conclusions clear.
  • Present your control results alongside your test results.
  • Given your particular methods, what is the actual sentence you will be able to say about your topic?  Results are what you can say, what your data literally tells you.

Conclusions:

Given the above results, what conclusions can you make? Your conclusion is what you decide your data means, given past experiments and other pieces of information. Your conclusions are what you want to say about your data.

What controls did you do to prove that the alternative explanation is not correct?

Discussion:
  • What do your results mean for the world?
  • How will your results affect other scientists?
  • What is the next logical experiment you propose?
  • Discuss your results in consideration of what you mention in the Background section.
