The 5 Whys For the Importance of Learning PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 06 June 2008 15:58
Sometimes a teacher need to look deeper at their content to discover why it is truly important to the students. One technique is the 5Whys, in which the teacher constantly asks herself, “Why?”

For example, the teacher thinks about the upcoming unit of the Revolutionary War and asks herself:

  1. “Why should the students study the Revolutionary War?”
“So they will know the famous events of the war.”

  2. “Why should they know the famous events of the war?”
“So they will know what happened in our history.”

  3. “Why should they will know what happened in our history?”
“So they will be prepared to analyze what is happening now.”

  4. “Why should they be prepared to analyze what is happening now
“So they make informed decisions about events."

  5. “Why should they be able to make informed decisions about events?”
“So they can participate fully in their government.”

Students can use the 5 Whys to delve deeper into a issue and get at its root cause.

Do you ask “Why” five times to determine critical learning and do you have your students ask “Why” five times to explore an issue more deeply?

Dr. Harry Grover Tuttle focuses on assessing and improving student learning through low- and high-tech tools.
