Our students learn so much in our classes, however, we often do not celebrate their learning. Remember when you were in elementary school and the teacher put a “Wonderful” sticker on your work? Remember when your teacher drew a star on your paper to show that you did a stellar job? When we think of such moments, we feel good about our learning. Our students can feel the same way if we build in success celebrations. How do you celebrate when a student has mastered a prerequisite skill, a performance task, a learning goal, or even a whole standard? How do we celebrate when the whole class has demonstrated proficiency in a skill, a performance task, a learning goal, or even a whole standard? Our celebrations should be learning celebrations. Have a learning thermometer that displays the high level of learning of the students. Let the students computer graph their increasing scores. Let them check off each skill as they demonstrate it successfully in their “I can” learning statements. How do you celebrate their learning successes on a regular basis? Dr. Harry Grover Tuttle focuses on assessing and improving student learning through low- and high-tech tools.POSTED ON HOTCHALK.COM
