During last week’s debate, much attention was given to our educational system.  While there is no panacea to cure the ails of our system, we must start somewhere.

Some believe, “Do away with the urban systems and replace them with charter systems.”  Others felt  that if we pay teachers more, we will have a better chance of retaining highly qualified teachers and just maybe the children will “learn to read.”  Whatever the answer to our system may be, we need to turn it around and quick.

I encourage each of you to tune into www.edweek.org, to watch the educational debate with Linda Darling-Hammond, who believes in the urban system but also believes we need to be proactive, rather than reactive.

After the debate, share your thoughts.  Looking forward to hearing from you.

Paula Knight is Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction K-12, for the St. Louis Public Schools.

Broken System
written by Jennifer Hayes, December 05, 2008
Yes, our educational system needs an overhaul, but things are getting better. There may be small steps of improvement, but minute steps can have a positive impact on tests scores.

I believe our leaders will restructure this system where needed and I believe that the best is yet to come.
