Dear Educators, In just a few short weeks the 2008-2009 school year begins, and to help you get a running start, HotChalk is rolling out a host of great new resources. New on the MyDesk editorial site are offerings that examine tablet PCs for instruction (“One to One That Works” by Pamela Livingston), provide expert teaching tips (Harry Tuttle’s “Oral Feedback for Improved Learning”) and take a look how live blogging works (Bob Sprankle). In addition, HotChalk bloggers offer a range of thoughtful perspectives on online gaming (Cathleen Richardson), back to school checklists for administrators (Lane Mills), integrating digital photography, and the responsibility of schools and districts to squarely address the sticky issues of race and poverty in designing systems that meet the needs of all students. We invite you to make your voice heard by joining discussions on these and other current HotChalk topics. In addition to the above content, this week we kick off two new series: Douglas Brooks’ “Back to School” classroom management series and Sheila Riley’s “Global Literacy” series, which looks at digital education initiatives in developing countries. We also introduce new HotChalk blogger Tina Ornduff, whose blog “Google in the Classroom,” will offer ongoing practical tips for educators on how to maximize Google’s Geo offerings for exciting instructional projects such as virtual field trips to space. A recent HotChalk-commissioned Zogby survey found, perhaps surprisingly, that 65 percent of teachers thought parents saw schools as “entirely responsible” for their child’s education. We want to help ensure kids don’t slip through the cracks by continuing to offer the kinds of exciting “real world” education tips and resources that make learning engaging, immediate and meaningful for students, that help parents get involved and support you in doing what you do best. Best, Susan McLester Susan McLester is an experienced educator and was editor of Technology & Learning magazine for 15 years, during which time the publication received an unprecedented number of awards for editorial excellence. She has written widely on the topic of technology for Business Week, Parenting, the Consortium for School Networking, and other industry publications and associations. She’s also edited CMP’s professional book “Digital Media in the Classroom” and has spoken at a variety of industry conferences over the years. In addition, she’s acted as a judge for the Association of Education Press awards, the Codie Awards, the Bologna Book Fair New Media Awards, and several other programs.
