As part of its ongoing effort to drive 21st-Century STEM education, HotChalk is partnering with the Federation of American Scientists to host a Virtual Science Fair for high school students. Brought to you in partnership with the Federation of American Scientists.

Eligibility:

All U.S. high school students.

Categories:       

  • Whole Class
  • Student Teams (up to 5 students)
  • Individual

Topics:

Any science taught in high school, for instance, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, etc.

Medium:

Original video, from 2-5 minutes in length, submit to us by uploading to our YouTube Channel.  You may submit a transcript, but you will be judged solely on your video.

Choose a Project Challenge: 

  1. Experiment: Perform and explain an experiment on video.  
  2. Creative: Communicate a scientific idea in a creative way, for instance via singing, dancing, poetry, etc. 
  3. Digital:  Present and explain a molecular process, using only graphics and video of drawn objects, no people. 

Note: In all three types of presentations, entrants should address all aspects of a scientific presentation. If no experiment is being performed, then the Methods section and Results section may be omitted.   

Deadline:

April 20, 2009

Judging:

Projects will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Scientific relevance, worldly importance of the topic
  2. Scientific Method, as described here
  3. Scientific novelty of the data
  4. Clarity of ideas and themes presented
  5. Quality of the video production, sound, light, cinematography
  6. Script and editing
  7. Overall appeal and ability to teach and engage viewers

Awards

Immune Attack 2.0There will be First Place, Second Place and Third Place winners. All winning video entries will be featured in Immune Attack 2.0, an adventure in the molecular world, a video game by FAS. The First Place winner’s school will also receive a LabQuest Quick Start Package from Vernier, valued at $349. All winning and honorable mention video entries will be displayed on HotChalk’s MyDesk digital magazine.  

How to Enter

1.     Go to YouTube or SchoolTube, create an account and post your video.

2.     Email to HotChalk editor Barbara Atkinson (at Barbara.atkinson@hotchalk.com) the following

a.) a link to your video on YouTube or SchoolTube,

b.) a Word/TXT document containing the following:

Your Information:

    • Your name
    • If student, your grade  and teacher’s name
    • If teacher, title of class you teach
    • The name of your school, district, city and state
    • Person to notify in case of winning entry

Category: (indicate which)

    • Whole class
    • Small group
    • Individual

Topics:

    • Science area you’re challenge falls under ( Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, etc.)
    • Specific topic of your video

Project Challenge:  (indicate which one you’ve chosen)

    • Experiment: Perform and explain an experiment on video. 
    • Creative: Communicate a scientific idea in a creative way, for instance via singing, dancing, poetry, etc.
    • Digital:  Present and explain a molecular process, using only graphics and video of drawn objects, no people. 

c.) a Word/Txt document with the Components of a Scientific Presentation answered about your project.

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Contest is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Limit one entry per student/team. Contest ends April 20, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. Three winning entries, designated as first, second and third place, will be notified via email, telephone or postal mail within two weeks of being chosen, and will be announced in HotChalk public communications. The prize(s) is non-transferable and no cash or other substitutions are allowed, except by HotChalk, which reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal value. All applicable taxes on the prize are the sole responsibility of the prize winner. Entrants agree that in case he/she is a winner, his/her name, likeness, photos or personal information can be used by HotChalk for advertising, promotion or publishing. The prize winner will be required to execute an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability within 21 business days of notification. Employees, family members of employees, vendors, and affiliates of HotChalk are not eligible to participate.

Many of our Middle School Students have expressed interest. Would you consider offering a MS level competition next year?
