I recently watched the Town Hall For Hope presentation hosted by Dave Ramsey. This event was presented at over 6,000 churches across America via webcast. For those of you that do not know who Dave Ramsey is, he is a financial talk show host and author of many books. He can be heard on many radio stations and has a television show (The Dave Ramsey Show) on the Fox Business Channel. I highly recommend his book "The Total Money Makeover" to those of you struggling financially.

Like me, Mr. Ramsey was sick and tired of all the negative news about our economy being broadcast on tv and in print and he wanted to do something to instill hope in people. In his presentation, he went into some detail on how we (America) have gotten ourselves into our current financial situation. He then took some questions from viewers. At the end of this program, Mr. Ramsey gave three actions that we can do to begin to get out of this recession. These actions are listed below along with some discussion about each.

Personally Take Action And Don't Wait For The Government To Help

While a lot of people are in financial distress right now and are receiving some help from the government, I would not recommend sitting back and waiting for someone to come to my rescue. The person that cares the most about your finances is the one that stares back at you in the mirror each morning. Most successful people are proactive. They do not wait for the next big opportunity to come along - they go out and create their own opportunities. In Stephen Covey's book "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" the number one trait of successful people is they are proactive. Don't wait until life happens to you, go out and happen to life.

Have A Positive Attitude And Beware Of Loser Talk

There is a lot of negativity in the news today. We all know that bad news sells. How many of you have read or heard that from mid-March to the beginning of May the stock market went up over 20%? Not many I bet. In addition to the media, there are many negative people that are constantly complaining and saying how tough and bad life is. I know you might not be able to avoid these people but please do not let them discourage you. I recently read the book "The Difference" by Jean Chatzky. In this book, Ms. Chatzky says to make a list of five positive things that happen in your life for a few days. I did this in my classroom with my paraprofessionals and it helped us see that we do have a lot of great things going on in our lives.

Give To People In Need

There are basically three things you can do with money - save/invest it, spend it or give it away. I definitely agree that saving money is important and buying things with it can be a lot of fun however, I have gotten the most joy in giving. I am not saying to go out and give all of your money away but giving back in some way - volunteering at a soup kitchen, buying food for a needy family, etc.) - is extremely rewarding. Not only are you helping someone else but you usually realize that there are others who are in worse situations than you. This makes you become grateful for all that you have. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the Town Hall For Hope and thought that Dave Ramsey did a great job in spreading a positive message in what has become a tough time for many.

Certified, but subbing Teacher

Finally! It was in the '70's when I heard "Get rid of your credit cards!" and "Get Back to Basics!" and so on...(Go Green!). I was just a tweenager then. So, why did it really take all this time to relearn these lessons? We lived on very little back then and it's not much different now! I don't want to be controlled by my posessions ~ I want to controll what little money I have!

At least in the classroom it is possible to take matters into your own hands somewhat. A lot of teachers forget that they preside over a miniature sales team for classroom fund raising. Check out this online magazine drive at www.craise.com It is one of the fastest ways to boost your classroom supplies budget, or get out for better field trips! smilies/cool.gif

Finally someone who does not blame the Bush Administraition for this mess!!
I am so glad I am not the only person that believes we Americans created this feasco ourselves! Before the market crash the national savings rate was negative! Enough said. I to follow Daves teachings and he has helped our family become better stewarts of our money.

Dave Ramsey is awesome! We took his Financial Peace University class at our church last year and it has transformed our lives.

For anyone who says you can't live without a credit card, YES YOU CAN! My wife and I (both teachers, and I a teacher at a Catholic high school, so you know how much I DON'T get paid!) have not had a credit card for almost 10 years now! No problems.

It takes discipline and planning, but living within your means is possible. Good luck!
