Schools Need A Business Plan PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 February 2009 14:19
If President Obama’s stimulus package passes Congress, schools stand to receive $140 billion dollars. Of that, $20 billion is earmarked to immediately put people to work rebuilding schools, and another $39 billion would help prevent even more severe budget cuts then districts have already seen. $26 billion would go to the longer-term Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Bush administration’s No Child Left Behind bill.

Critics say this is a mistake. That schools will come to rely upon these new funds at a time when the nation can barely keep its head above water. Moreover, they point out, there still remains $5 billion in unspent federal education money, according to the Education Department.

Proponents argue we can hardly afford to let our schools flounder, especially at a time when educating students to arm them with the skills to build a more solid national economy and help us remain competitive in the global workforce is more crucial than ever.

Both sides are right. The solution lies, in part, in shifting education’s traditional approach to managing -- or not managing -- money and other resources. It’s time we applied the same proven efficiencies businesses must use to stay afloat, to our schools.

Yes, education is underfunded and has been for some time. Yet the fact that $5 billion languishes unspent during a time when teachers are being laid off in the thousands is pretty unconscionable. If we are to get through these tough times with minimal damage to our children, then schools and business need to work in partnership to make sure we’re spending smarter and with less waste.

A solid business plan, a hard look at Return on Investment, maximizing time and resources, and  pulling together as a community in the spirit of determination are the things that will ultimately save us and our schools.  Let’s stop squabbling among ourselves and get to work ensuring our children’s futures.
