President and Chief Executive Officer
Edward Fields has more than 20 years experience developing and marketing educational technology and enterprise software solutions. Prior to founding HotChalk, Ed served as Senior Vice President of Marketing, Agile Software Corporation, President and CEO of ProductFactory, Inc. (a software firm he co-founded which was acquired by Agile Software in 2003) and Director of Interactive Publishing at The Learning Company. Ed has a B.A., Mass Communications from the University of Denver.
Chief Financial Officer
Jon comes to us with more than 25 years of financial and operational experience. Most recently, Jon was CFO of Wombat, a low latency market data infrastructure provider, now owned by the New York Stock Exchange. Earlier in his career Jon served as CFO of TIBCO Finance Technology and Tibco Software (TIBX) prior to and a key contributor to its initial public offering. Prior to this, Jon served as audit manager for Ernst & Young, and earned certifications as a California Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Accountant in England as well as a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Bath University, England.
Rafael de Cardenas
Chief Academic Officer and President, HotChalk International
Rafael de Cardenas has more than 17 years experience building and managing companies internationally in the education industry. Prior to starting up HotChalk International, Rafa served as President of Innovation and Global Products at Grupo SM, a large international education publishing company. Prior to this, Rafa served as Director of International Markets at Grupo SM, running operations in several countries. He previously founded and lead the operation in Argentina. Earlier in his career, Rafa served at Arthur Andersen, auditing companies in the energy sector. Rafa has a Bachelor in Business Administration from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain), PhD studies in International Relations at the same university, and is a graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MBA earned in the Sloan Fellows Program.
Chief Learning Officer
Nicholas has spent more than 25 years in education and technology. Most recently, he was President of Macmillan Labs for Higher Education, an R&D group dedicated to building innovative technology products that solve problems for students and teachers in elegant ways. Prior to joining Macmillan, Nicholas spent nine years at Aplia, a leading provider of online homework for higher education, where he helped to grow the company from startup to profitability and finally to successful acquisition by Cengage Learning in 2007. Nicholas remained with Cengage Learning as Vice President of Software Products until 2009. His experience also includes work at SRI Consulting, Pensare, and Agile Mind, as well as a decade teaching middle school students. He earned his master’s degree at Brandeis University.
Senior Vice President, University Partnerships
Mark Zinselmeier has more than 15 years of experience in operations, customer service and call center management. Prior to joining HotChalk, Mark managed the national roll-out of the Discovery Education streaming video service reaching more than 70k US K-12 schools. Mark is a graduate of the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts in Radio, TV and Film.
Mary Jane Pearson, PhD
Vice President, Academic Affairs and Curriculum - Education
Mary Jane Pearson, Ph.D., has been involved in “educator education” for more than 30 years. Dr. Pearson’s unique credentials as a teacher educator include chairing the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC), the largest educator licensing agency in the U.S. During her nine-year tenure as a commissioner, she co-authored the research on beginning teacher support and assessment that has become the worldwide standard for the support of new teachers. In addition, Dr. Pearson was appointed by the U.S. President to serve as the Regional Representative for the United States Department of Education. In recognition of her service to education, Dr. Pearson was named California Teacher Educator of the Year.
Julia A. Smith, PhD, RN, CNS
Vice President, Academic Affairs and Curriculum - Nursing
Julia A. Smith, PhD, RN, CNS has a distinguished career in healthcare management and higher education, specializing in strategic planning, program development, and leadership of complex, multidisciplinary organizations. In addition to executive leadership roles in community health and university administration, Dr. Smith has served as a Dean of Nursing, graduate faculty member, doctoral mentor, and peer reviewer of scholarly publications. A registered nurse for over 25 years, she earned her BSN and MSN from San Diego State University and her PhD in Nursing from University of San Diego.
Vice President, Business Development
Scott Altschuler has helped shape the K12 and Higher Education services, software, and content space for over 12 years. Prior to his work at HotChalk, Scott was a Director at Discovery Education where he helped the organization grow their streaming video offering to dominant market adoption. Scott is a graduate of Miami University (Oxford, OH) with a Bachelor of Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Vice President, Marketing
Segev Tsfati has more than 15 years of experience in consumer marketing, business analysis, consulting, and government. Before joining the HotChalk team, Segev directed online marketing spend supporting Walden University. Prior marketing roles at America Online and Capital One included retention, account management, and business intelligence. Segev earned an MBA at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Bachelors Degree in Information Systems at University of Maryland University College.
Vice President, Creative Services
Brian Schwartz is an established expert in direct response creative and lead generation. He has helped firms maximize their creative efforts in the online space for the past 15 years. Prior to HotChalk, Brian led the creative agency at QuinStreet (QNST), one of the nation’s leading online marketing firms. Brian earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
Vice President, Student Services
Patty comes to HotChalk with more than 12 years of academic and student services experience. Prior to HotChalk, Patty served as Dean of Academic Affairs with EDMC, and provided academic and student support leadership. Patty has served as a student service leader for both non-profit universities, as well as for-profit colleges, helping them improve their student retention practices. Patty has been with HotChalk for over three years, leading the growth of the student services and support teams. She holds an MA in Education with an emphasis in Counseling and Student Personnel from San Jose State University.
Vice President, Human Resources
Pauline joins us with over 20 years of broad range HR management experience in private and public companies in the high-tech, bio-tech and non-profit sectors. She has a proven track record in building the HR infrastructure for startups and improving the organizational effectiveness of high growth companies. She successfully supported multiple companies through IPO’s, acquisitions, and organization restructures. Prior to joining HotChalk, Pauline was the head of HR at Voxify, a top-ranked SaaS speech solutions provider. Pauline earned her B.A. in International Relations from Wellesley College and her M.Ed from Harvard University.
Vice President, Community Development
Kim joins HotChalk with more than 20 years of experience in developing and managing affinity communities. A seasoned Silicon Valley professional and recognized personal development thought leader, she is a best selling author and highly regarded entrepreneur. Her previous experience includes founding MyLifeCompass; an eCoaching company, and SkillsVillage; a Human Capital Management company (acquired by Oracle). Kim is responsible for all components of HotChalk’s education communities.
Vice President, Finance and Corporate Controller
Mike Cain has been running finance and accounting operations for software companies in Silicon Valley for over 20 years. Most recently Mike was VP Finance/Business Unit Controller at Arcot Systems, a leading SaaS provider of online identity authentication solutions which was acquired by CA Technologies. He also spent several years as Corporate Controller at TIBCO Finance Technology. Earlier in his career, Mike worked at Deloitte & Touche, The Gap and the San Jose Sharks. Mike received a B.S. in Business Administration with an Accounting concentration from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
Vice President, Learning Solutions
Justin Beals has more than 15 years of experience in envisioning and creating enterprise education solutions. Prior to joining HotChalk, Justin served as the Senior Executive Director of R&D at Macmillan Publishing, SVP of Custom Solutions at Idhasoft LLC, and was founder and CEO of Roundbox Global – a multinational education technology development firm. In 2010 Justin received a Sloan-C Effective Practices award for his work on Semantic Analysis of Learning Assets. Justin designed and architected myNGConnect, the learning platform for National Geographic School Publishing, which recently won a CODie award for “Best Science/Health Instructional Solution.”
